The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (United Nations)

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
United Nations

Blurb: From the time of its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have been a source of inspiration for nations and for individuals alike to recognise, protect and promote basic human rights and freedoms.

In the decades since its inception dramatic changes have swept the globe, but the values underpinning the Declaration - a fundamental commitment to human dignity, equality, fairness and universality - endure and are as relevant today as when it was first proclaimed.

In this charming, whimsical interpretation, Michael Streich's illustrations give fresh voice to the enduring sentiments that resonate from every page, evoking the timelessness, passion and power of this remarkable document.

Bad As I Wanna Be (Dennis Rodman with Tim Keown)

Bad As I Wanna Be
Dennis Rodman with Tim Keown

Blurb: Fifty percent of life in the NBA is sex. The other fifty percent is money. On an April night in 1993 I sat in the cab of my pickup truck with a rifle on my lap, deciding whether to kill myself. I don't expect Scottie Pippen to forgive me for what I did to him. I don't expect him to forget about it either. I've been homeless. I've worked at 7-Eleven. I'm a real person, with real experiences, not some image that somebody in the NBA office created. When you talk about race in basketball, the whole thing is simple: a black player knows he can go out on the court and kick a white player's ass. I used to go through the whole routine - dress up, wear makeup, act like a girl. Those guys in San Antonio can kiss my ass, especially Gregg Popovich, the general manager...Popovich wanted to be the guy who tamed Dennis Rodman. Madonna looked at me all sexy and said, 'You're staying with me, in my room.' How much do you really want to win when you have as much money, attention, and fame as Shaquille O'Neal does? White women get into relationships with black men because they think the sex is going to be better. I knew I would have been just another nigger if I didn't play basketball. I wanted to be white because I was black, and black was never the right colour. I left the table-by-myself-and went to see Madonna. We were in a stairwell, and she was saying, 'You love me. You want to be with me. Leave with me right now and forget your girlfriend.' The Spurs might be more of a basketball team if David Robinson didn't freeze every time they play a big game. You're going to have to find a way to stop me on your own, bro, and nobody's found it yet.

I'm Not Really Here (Tim Allen)

I'm Not Really Here
Tim Allen

Blurb: In his number one New York Times bestseller, Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man, Tim Allen regaled us with tales from the male-female front. Now, in I'm Not Really Here, he takes a look at men in midlife - and their relationship to wives, children, friends, the universe, God, and why it's so tough to get a good night's sleep.

The book opens with Tim suddenly waking from a strange dream. He's been reading late into the night about today's hot scientific topic - quantum physics - and what he's learned about the nature of reality really disturbs him. Fortunately, he's got plenty of time to mull it over. Tim's wife and daughter are going away on a camping trip, and Tim is left at home with their dog, Spot. At first, he's excited at the opportunity to eat what he wants (bologna and potato chip sandwiches), watch the sci-fi videos he loves, and finish the 1946 Ford he's been restoring so he can deliver it to a car show on Monday. Unfortunately, he can't find the final part: a one-of-a-kind hood ornament. He encounters very strange coincidences, meets people he doesn't know who seem to know too much about him, and wonders if his life is half full or half empty.

As he roams from room to room, Tim ponders how we wind up sounding like our parents when we raise our own children ('Don't stir your ice cream into soup!'), men's fascination with pricey gadgets ('Does this drill bit set really cost $89,000?') and how romantic 'chemistry' really works ('It's all based on salt'). He describes his own rise to celebrity and what it's like to buy groceries without wearing a mask. He explores the allure of hot cars, the temptation of fast-food chain prizes which seem to be getting bigger and bigger all the time ('I'll have the happy meal and the Harley, please'), and his obsession with his place in the cosmos.

I'm Not Really Here deals, in the Toolman's inimitable way, with some of the urgent questions a man faces at midlife, from 'What is real?' to what should he eat for breakfast ('The gummy cinnamon buns or the cereal no one can pronounce? Moose lips. Mouse licks'). This book is a culmination of a five-year journey of self-discovery. It will surprise and challenge, make you wonder and think, and induce laughter on every page.

Balibo (Jill Jolliffe)

Jill Jolliffe

Blurb: In October 1975, during the decolonisation of Portuguese Timor, five young television reporters travelled from Australia to report on the brewing unrest in the region. It was a journey that would be their last: Greg Shackleton, Gary Cunningham, and Tony Stewart of Channel Seven, and Brian Peters and Malcolm Rennie of Channel Nine, were killed by the Indonesian military as they filmed the infantry troops advancing into the border town of Balibo. In the months that followed, a sixth man who went to investigate their fate, freelance journalist Roger East, was also executed.

In this updated edition of the book that was originally published as Cover-Up, and on which the film Balibo is based, Jill Joliffe reveals previously hidden details of one of the most shameful episodes in Australia's history. In doing so, she brings to light new material about Roger East, and details of the 2007 Glebe inquest into the death of Brian Peters.

The result of over 30 years of personal investigations and tireless research, Balibo provides a unique first-hand account of the deaths of the five journalists and of Roger East. Jolliffe argues that the Australian government and its Western allies were always aware of the circumstances of the killings of the Balibo Five, as they came to be known, and that their cover-up of those details was a key factor in Indonesia's decision to invade and occupy East Timor.

Part memoir, part history, this searing book is as much an indictment of the Balibo killers as it is of Australia's role in East Timor's recent tragic history

Cut and Run: CSI Miami
Don Cortez

Blurb: By air, sea, and land the members of the Miami-Dade Crime Lab are called out. In a field outside the everglades a ballon has just set down; the lone man inside the basket is dead - an apparent suicide. A yacht riddled with bullets limps into the Port of Miami; only a gravely wounded hijacker survives, confessing that their are drugs somewhere on board, but he can't find them. A local journalist, looking to break out of the rat race with a novel based on the people he covers on his beat, is found dead.

In the yacht's gallery is a record-setting sunfish that seems to be the key piece of evidence to just what was being smuggled on the shop, yet the lab is stumped when they discover no more than the normal parasites infesting the fish. A raunchy video of a citrus heiress having sex in a public place gives her the motive to kill the journalist-turned-novelist, but she has an alibi. All small pieces of the puzzles that Horatio Caine and the member of his team have to unravel to find out why all these people were killed. Before it is over the members of the Miami-Dade Crime Lab are caught up in the intrigue that reaches to the heart of Castro's Cuba.

That's Ambitious: More Classic Commentary
Dennis Cometti

Blurb: A follow-up to the best-selling 'Centimetre Perfect?' Some would say, 'That's Ambitious'.

Dennis muses about huddle breath, tries out a Billy Connolly accent, reminisces about old Eagles songs, reveals his favourite team jumper, and, in his trademark style, impresses with his extensive knowledge of the AFL game, its players and trivia.
